PECS
Picture Exchange Communication System
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a unique augmentative or alternative communication training program for use with young children with autism and other social and communication deficits.
Background
The PECS was developed at the Delaware Autistic Program in response to the many difficulties encountered in a variety of communication training programs for Autistic children. While sign language and point systems involve various pre-requisite skills or abilities not available to the autistic child, the PECS focuses on interactive behavior and communication of fundamental needs. Children using the PECS are taught to approach and give a picture of a desired item to a communication partner in exchange for that item.
Medical Support Services offers evening workshops for parents and teachers who wish to carry-over this program in the child’s home or school setting.
Candidates for Referral
Children with autism, pervasive development disorder (PDD) or other socio-communication disorders, who do not speak, can benefit from the PECS program.
