Torticollis

What is it?

Torticollis is a condition characterized by an infant holding their head tilted to one side with their chin trust to the other side. The baby cryingmost common source of torticollis is a shortening of the neck muscle. This congenital condition can arise during pregnancy or as a result of the birth process. Acquired torticollis can also occur because of patterned placement of the child. Children will hold their head to one side because of pain.

Treatment Program

The treatment for congenital torticollis is carried out by a Physical Therapist. Stretching exercises are designed to address the specific condition. The parents are instructed and carry out the stretching exercises several times a day.

It is important that the child be consistently position to minimize the tightness in the neck.
