Splinting for Lower Extremity Orthotics

What is it?

A Dynamic Ankle Foot Orthosis (DAFO) is a lower extremity brace designed for the pediatric population. At Medical Support Services our physical therapists are trained to assess the development, movement patterns and biomechanical alignment of our patients to determine a plan of care. Often children requiring physical therapy have abnormal muscle tone, orthopedic problems and developmental delays. They may benefit from lower extremity bracing to assist with positioning, standing and gait activities. When the physician and therapist agree that bracing is appropriate, our therapists work with Cascade DAFO, Inc. to provide custom made orthotics for the foot and ankle.

The child and caregiver may choose colors and Velcro trimlines of their preference. The result is an attractive brace made of thin, flexible plastic, that wraps comfortably around the foot and provides the child with the input and stability they need. At Medical Support Services we can also assess the need for orthotic shoe inserts, and orthotics that fit just above or below the malleoli for children who need less support.
